Akureyri is a town in northern Iceland. It is the second-largest urban area in the country and the capital of the Northern Region. The town is located on the shores of Eyjafjörður, a fjord in the north of Iceland, and has a population of around 18,000 people. It is known for its beautiful natural surroundings, including nearby mountains and waterfalls, as well as its vibrant cultural scene, with museums, galleries, and a variety of festivals throughout the year. The town is also a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, and fishing.
We went whale watching here and that was really a once in a lifetime experience (at least when you do it the first time). We were the only ship this day at the beginning of November and only a few other people were sharing the trip with us. So there was enough space for us to take photos. I took about 30 minutes to be far enough away from Akureyri to be able to see the first whales. At this day there were quite a lot of whales in the area.
Most of the time we were busy to catch all the nice deep dives but we were also really lucky to see two or three jumps out of the water! Based on the statement from our guide from the ship this can be seen really rarely because it takes so much energy for the whale to jump out of the water! She was assuming that this whlae put on a show for only for us!
Even though it is quite expensive (70 Euro each person) it's absolutely worth do it, I mean when do will have the next to see real whales in their natural enviromnent?
