Iceland, with its very unique landscapes, had always been one of our dream destinations. Although the country located right between Europe and North America is not very big, you could easily spend 2-3 month there and still discover something new every day – but as the timeframe of our trip was limited by our daughter’s school holidays, 15 days were all we had.
We started our trip in late October and came back in early November. For us, fall was the perfect time of the year: not as crowded as in the summer months but still accessible (roads can often be closed due to weather conditions during winter time). Also, with daylight from about 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and the sun not rising very high, we always had perfect light conditions for our photos during the day plus the chance to see the northern lights at night.
It is generally recommended to drive a 4x4 in Iceland but if you mainly stay on the ring road (where most of the attractions are) and travel in a time with no risk of snow or ice, you can really drive any car. You can check the live status of road conditions on www.road.is.
- Area A mainly covers the region around Kevlavik Airport, Reykjavik and the Golden Circle
- Area B is the south-eastern part of Iceland with highlights as diamond beach and awesome waterfalls
- Area C covers the northern part of the country from the city of Egilstadir in the east, via snowy mountains, the famous Myvatn geothermal area and Iceland’s whale watching capital Akureyri.
