Awesome place: Colmar

Colmar sits in the heart of Alsace in north-eastern France and is best known for a remarkably well-preserved historic centre. Its narrow streets combine colourful half-timbered houses, carved wooden details, stone arcades and flower-filled windows. The town's appearance reflects the long cultural exchange between France and the German-speaking Rhine region, giving Colmar an architectural character that feels distinct from most other French towns.

The most photographed area is Petite Venise, where the River Lauch passes a cluster of old fishermen's and tanners' houses. Small bridges, waterfront paths and reflections from the brightly painted facades create the romantic canal views shown in the walking video. Despite its famous appearance, the district is compact: it connects naturally with the Covered Market and the surrounding old-town lanes, so it can be explored without transport or a complicated itinerary.

Colmar also rewards attention away from the canals. The Koïfhus, or Old Customs House, recalls the town's importance as a medieval trading centre. Nearby, Saint Martin Church dominates the historic core with its Gothic stonework, while the Dominican Church and its square provide a quieter contrast. Between these landmarks, pedestrian streets such as Rue des Marchands reveal ornate facades, traditional restaurants, small shops and many of the details that make the centre enjoyable at walking pace.

From the water, the route moves north through restaurant streets to the Koïfhus and the heart of the medieval town. Saint Martin Church and its surrounding square form the architectural centre of the walk, followed by the pedestrian lanes, the Dominican Church, decorative historic facades and Colmar's shopping streets. The final minutes return to another church square framed by half-timbered houses.
