Icelandic name: Kolugljúfur
Kolugljúfur Canyon is a narrow canyon in North Iceland, close to Víðidalur and not far from Route 1. The river Víðidalsá cuts through the dark rock here and creates Kolufossar, a series of waterfalls that make the stop especially photogenic. It is a compact place rather than a long hike, but the cliffs, the bridge and the open landscape give it a dramatic feeling.
To reach the canyon you leave Route 1 for a smaller local road. In normal summer or dry autumn conditions this is usually manageable with a standard car, but after heavy rain, snow or icy weather a 4x4 is the safer choice. There is a small parking area close to the viewpoint, so the walk itself is short. Stay careful near the edge, because not every exposed section is protected by fences or clear markings.
