Awesome place: Schwerin

One day trip to Schwerin with its famous castle.

Walk in Schwerin from the "Weiße Flotte" peer to the castle and surrounding gardens, to the historic grinding mill and old town.

Schwerin castle and garden day trip

Schwerin is the capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. After the fall of the Berlin wall it has been modernized and refurbished to be more attractive for the people living there as well as for the many tourists visiting Schwerin every year. The most visited place is for sure the castle which has also been refurbished in the last decades. Nowadays the parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is located there. This is undoubtable one of the most representative buildings which you can have!

We were quite surprised (in a positive way) by the cleanliness of the city. Everything is there what you need, even free toilets. This is unusual in Germany because either you have public toilets where you need to pay or if you go to a Restaurant they also usually charge you if you are not one of their guests. There are a lot parking spaces right next to the castle with moderate prices.

The old town gives you are real feeling (similar to Wismar to walk in a town of the middle ages. In the walk of the video below you can find some really tight streets such as the "Enge Straße" which literally means "Narrow street". However, most of the film material has been made at the castle or in the surrounding garden area, which is also highly recommended to be visited.

We also did a short visit to a historical grinding mill (Location: Schleifmühle Schwerin. The entrance is around 5€ but you need to know that you only enter a small room where you can have a look to mechanism including a short presentation. I would not pay for it because you can watch for free outside when the wheel starts to rotate at the end of the presentation.

Our final destination was the "Weiße Flotte", right next to the castle where we booked a trip by boat. You have usually (apart from some sepcial trip offers sometimes) the choice between two trips: 4 lake trip or the islands trip. The second one is mainly booked up already, so we did the 4-lake trip which takes you along the Schweriner See, Heidensee, Ziegelsee and Ziegelinnensee. It was really relaxing, the waether was perfect but even at bad weather conditions I would recommend to do a trip! You can find details on their official website Weiße Flotte.
