Golden Circle part 3
Hike from Seljalandsfoss waterfall to Gljufrabui and Nauthusagil waterfalls
If you like waterfalls, this is your place to be! Apart from the very impressive and famous Seljalandsfoss, there are several more to see here. Some of them don’t even seem to have a name – and they still have a size that could easily make them a major tourist attraction in most other countries. We decided to take a closer look at these three:
Walk behind one of the largest waterfalls
Seljalandsfoss waterfall
Location: HERE
Islandic name: Seljalandsfoss
Seljalandsfoss is a waterfall located in the South Region of Iceland. It's a popular tourist attraction known for its unique feature of a pathway that leads behind the waterfall, allowing visitors to walk behind the cascading water and get a different perspective of the waterfall. The waterfall is 60 meters (197 feet) tall and is fed by the Seljalands River. Seljalandsfoss is one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls. The 60m (197 feet) tall waterfall is already very impressive from the front, but the real attraction at this spot is going behind the waterfall. If you do that, be prepared to get soaked! We would recommend waterproof clothes and if you want to take pictures from the back, make sure to also protect your camera from the spraying mist.
If you have time, go down the path a little further – there are a lot more smaller waterfalls coming down the cliff. A 10-15min walk will take you to our next spot.
Some efford required to get the perfect view
Gljufrabui waterfall
Location: HERE
Islandic name: Gljúfrabúi
Gljúfrabúi waterfall is not far away from Seljalandsfoss – you can walk over within a few minutes but it also has it’s own parking lot if you prefer to drive.
The waterfall is hidden in a cave and you can only access it and get the full view if you are brave enough to balance from rock to rock trough the stream that springs from the waterfall. The view of the waterfall is absolutely worth the effort, though!
Bonus tip: if you have a tripod with you, that makes an excellent hiking pole to keep your balance on the rocks.
The waterfall where a hike is not enough
Nauthusagil waterfall
Location: HERE
Islandic name: Nauthúsafoss / Nauthúsagil waterfall
Nauthúsagil is a waterfall located in the South Region of Iceland. It's a lesser-known waterfall compared to other popular attractions in the area, but it's still a popular spot for visitors due to its unique and scenic location. The waterfall is located in a narrow canyon surrounded by cliffs, and it's fed by a small stream. The waterfall is considered a hidden gem by those who visit, as it provides a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere and a unique perspective of Iceland's stunning natural beauty. Nauthúsafoss is difficult to reach. You have to drive a couple of kilometers on a rough road so we would recommend an SUV like car.

Quite similar to Gljúfrabúi waterfall you can only access it by walking through a creek by balancing on rocks, but for much longer than at Gljúfrabúi.
We must have taken a wrong turn at some point because we did not get to Nauthúsafoss. Our journey ended at a small pond that we could not cross without getting wet – and the waterfall at that pond was not the one we expected to see.
