Schönbrunn and central cemetery walks

Vienna walk in Schönbrunn garden area

Schönbrunn palace and garden visit

1 - Schönbrunn visit
2 - Central Cemetery (Zentralfriedhof)

The walk started on the way to the main entrance of Vienna Schönbrunn palace. It already gives a nice first impression of what you can expect. At the main entrance you have a really good view towards the main yard in front of the palace. In the past this was the place were the guards trained for the next precdual event. One main hint is that you should plan at least in advance for 15 minutes when you have booked a fixed slot in the Schönbrunn palace.

Unfortunately it was not allowed to film inside the palace. However, you really need to do the audio guide tour at least where everything is well explained about the history of this place. I would really call that a "must" in Vienna.

Afterwards we made a walk in the garden of Schönbrunn. We started with its Orangerie and conservatoy which has been a place for mediterian plants also with the conservatoy serving for winter place. After that we took a visit to the Ivy garden, which is quite interesting but however not so impressive, so if you want you can also sjop this one when you are short of time.

The huge garden area with the neptune fountain and Café Gloriette was again one of the highlights you should not miss! To escape the whole area is really challenging. We had a day with about 35°C, which was really hot, and we therefore struggled to visit all the highlights. However, we went uphill to the Café Gloriette which is a unique place with a great overview to the Schönbrunn garden. There is also a Cafe located where you can buy snacks or even sit down and have a real "Wiener Melange".

The way down was, of course, much easier and quicker. So finally we went to the maze and yes we have not found the official way out of it :-). Most likely we were just impatient and after the 4th or 5th try we gave up.

You can find everythign relevant for Schönbrunn palace on their official website: Schönbrunn Website

Vienna cemetery walk

Central Cemetery in Vienna

The walk was done in July 2023 on a hot and sunny day. We started at door 9 entry and walked along some normal graves from random people but already got an impression how huge this cemetery is! Even though it is not the largest cemetery world-wide it is one of the largest in Europe! It is separated in a jewish and non-jewish area. We only visited the non-jewish area. There was also a dedicated cemetery for children but we have not visited that, would be too sad to this for sure!

We focuseed on the graves from either fmaous persons such as Udo Jürgens, Falco or Beethoven as well as Johann Strauss. The have found their last resort in impressivaly large graves, however it shuld be noticed that generals from World War I had even bigger graves / areas sometimes even with personal bust / statue! The visit was absoluty worth it and we would recommend to every Vienna visitor who stays longer than 4 days to visit this place. We probably would recommend to enter the cemetery over the main entrance because the femous graves and the church is much closer.
