First stop in Zone 1

Bridge between continents

Things to know

Location: HERE
Icelandic name: Miðlína or Brú milli heimsálfa

Arrival:
The Bridge Between Continents spans a visible fissure between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. It is a good place for photos and helps illustrate how the plates continue to move apart over time. A medium-sized parking area nearby is free to use. The site can become busy in summer, while our October visit offered plenty of available parking.

And this is how the bridge looks like: (Click on it for high resolution)

Actually there is not so much to do on site. Of course you can take some pictures between the plates which can be lot of fun. You can also do a short hike along the rift. The landscape around is very typical for Keflavik area: Volcanic stones everywhere. First time it feels a little bit like being on the moon or on Mars. However, it is for sure an awesome place to visit and a must for every iceland visitor!

Second stop in Zone 1 of Iceland round trip

Gunnuhver goethermal area

Things to know

Location: HERE
Icelandic name: Gunnuhver

Arrival:
Here you will also find a prepared parking site. However, it is not made of asphalt. The last 500 m from the main road consists of stone and sand but is easily accessible also with normal cars without four wheel drive!

Actually on site it is a quite small area but from far away you can already see the steam. When you get close to them you will realize a slight smell of sulfur. Also here this area is very easy to access by simply walking on a pedestrian bridge which shows you many warning that it get very hot if you are to close.

It is definitely worth a visit but there are much bigger goethermal areas like the Krysuvik or Myvatn area!
Third stop in Zone 1 of Iceland round trip

Krysuvik goethermal area

Things to know

Location: HERE
Icelandic name: Krýsuvík

Arrival:
As this is also a famous tourist spot you can get really close to that area by car with a huge parking space. During the summer season you will also find a toilet. In late October it was unfortunately closed. Even at this time the site was well visited, however, still enough space to explore everything!

To give a better first impression of these geothermal fields, we uploaded a YouTube video showing the steam, bubbling ground and atmosphere on site.

As you can see in the picture below, the area is well prepared for visitors. A couple of stairs give a start for a short (~500 m) hike around the site.

Fourth stop in Zone 1 of Iceland round trip

Blue lagoon

Things to know

Location: HERE
Icelandic name: Bláa lónið

Arrival:
Unfortunately we needed to cancel this stop on short notice. You will hear mixed reviews from visitors: On one hand it is a really good spa experience and worth to do it. On the other hand you also hear it is overcrowded with tourists who are only doing a 3 day trip as a stopover to and from the US. On all you need to consider quite high price which are at around 60 USD / 60 EUR each person!

We have not been there so therefore I recommend the video below to get an idea about the Blue Lagoon swimming and spa location:
